Gosu – Amazing Sushi Place

By Kim Pickworth

Having recently arrived to spend a month working in the New Zealand Porter Novelli office, I was eager to explore the local eateries offering lunch to the ravenous working population surrounding Mt Eden and who better to take me to my first lunch destination than my colleague, Will Seal.

Being a Kiwi who spends most of the year living in London, I try not to compare home to ‘home’. However, I make severe exceptions when it comes to two very important topics in my life – the sushi and coffee on offer.

After a nice stroll in the sun, Will and I arrived at the local Sushi shop, Gosu.  A modest, clean and spacious place nestled away on Mt Eden Road. After casting my eyes up the long refrigerated casing of the passionately handmade bundles of sushi goodness, A feeling of vindication befell me when I thought back to my near weekly, London-based rants regarding the sub-standard lunchtime (or anytime) sushi available to the hard-working masses. Here I am at the Auckland office, picking up Day One’s lunch, and Will had taken me to Sushi heaven!

Inside one of the sushi cabinets

Available to any discerning Aucklander who so happens to stumble upon this Sushi jackpot was a vast array of delicately put together pieces that generated such admiration from each customer as they reached in to retrieve their choice of fresh, healthy nourishment.  If you wanted to go beyond your average salmon, avocado or chicken and feta choice, there was a selection to inspire anyone to step outside their ‘safe’ sushi bubble. Chicken and bacon atop well prepared rice, tied nicely together with ribbons of seaweed in addition to whole baby prawns in a sweet and sour mix, mounted on a lengthy rice strip, wound tightly with seaweed of the right texture and freshness.

Having made the decision prior to take away our meals, on paying we were greeted by a gentleman who offered all you can eat wasabi and soy sauce – the icing on the cake for any sushi lover. With our corporate lunch box’s stapled and bursting (literally) with all the sushi we could eat, Will walked me back to the office one very content sushi lover.
