Grouchos Café

When I go to a café, the thing that gets my attention straight away is mince on toast on the menu. Perhaps it’s the years of having mince on toast from leftover dinners when I was still living at home in my formative years. So when I saw that Grouchos Café did this retro favourite – I had to have it with poached egg on top of course.

The mince with peas and corn kernels came out not on the toast but to the side. Thoughtful because not everyone wants soggy bread. Me, I wasn’t too fussed. The toast slices could have been a bit bigger but there was plenty of mince to make up for it so I wasn’t too phased. It was also served on a retro wodden plate which was a nice touch. The free range poached egg was cooked to perfection and oozed yolk which created a nice sauce for the mince.

I washed the mince on toast down with a bottle of Pete’s fizzy drink which hit the spot. The mince on toast with poached egg and fizzy was $23 which was fair for what I received. In addition to the Grouchos Café menu, they also offer sandwiches, salads and gluten free options so it’s well worth a visit if you’re in the city.

Open Monday to Friday.
