Being a New Zealand Warriors and Manu Vatuvei fan, there was only one option when I walked into this fast food joint. “The Beast” is Burger Queen’s marquee burger and much like the hulking winger, the burger is full of action and leaves you breathless when you attempt to tackle it!
Straight from the outset, I knew this burger was going to be different. And it was. The first thing that struck me was the packaging. It’s the first time I’ve been delivered a burger on its own plate wrapped in tin foil. Wow.
The Beast’s burgers buns were toasted and had 1/3 pound of beef, bacon, steak (yes I realise I’ve listed beef already), chicken, tomato, beetroot, caramalised onions, lettuce, egg, cheese, mayo and special sauce. The burger was hot with my glasses fogging up constantly while I attempted to eat this thing. About three quarters of the way through the burger, I had to sit back and wipe away my meat sweats. It was intense. This thing was massive and one of the biggest burgers I’d eaten.
If there was any criticism, the bottom bun was probably a bit soggy (hard not to be with the amount of ingredients). Bits of the burger would also fall out from time to time. No doofers here.
The Beast was $13 and a side of chips was $1.50 although there was no need for the chips – the burger was easily enough. Burger Queen is a Mt Albert institution and their burger menu is well worth checking out. The burgers generally range from $6 to $9 and are broken into three categories; Queen, Chargrilled and Classic. There’s about 20 odd burgers on show and in addition to the Beast, people can also try the Dinosaur, the Mammoth and the Whale* among others. I thoroughly recommend this place.
As an aside, the Beast should only be eaten at the table – it is way too big to be eaten on the go or on your lap. You’ve been warned!
(*) Not actually whale meat.
