The Gluten Free Grocer opened its doors in 2010 and fast attracted visitors hungry for gluten-free products.
The store boasts the largest selection of gluten-free products in Auckland and with many products catering for people who need to avoid nuts, eggs and dairy it has fast become a mecca for those of us with food allergies.
It is not a café, nor does it pretend to be, but it does offer a range of gluten-free goodies that are perfect for when you’re in a hurry.
The range varies, depending on the time of day that you visit, but if you’re early you can take your pick from gluten-free pies, sausage rolls, cakes, muffins and slices and various breads.
From the cabinet I ordered a gluten-free mini pizza and a piece of ginger crunch, totalling $8.00. The pizza was a bit dry and the topping was pretty uninspired, but it was a good size, filling and tasty and with none of that nasty crumbling texture you often find in other GF baking.
Ginger crunch is a favourite, and this didn’t disappoint with a nice thick ginger icing and firm base with a slight crunch – something I’d be happy to order again.
I have to say the GF baking sold in this store isn’t my favourite but I’m awarding points for value, convenience and providing reliable GF food – always available and safe (with no contamination from other gluten-containing goodies.)
